The Grifters are a noise trio from Memphis.
"So Happy Together" is the title of this 1992 album, two distorted and monstrous yet undoubtedly human embracing bodies make up the cover, love reigns within.
Yes, this is an album about love for unhappiness and loneliness, about the warmth these two sensations can emit when you are so used to living with them, about the beauty of despair, about the sublime exile madness can lead us to.
Within it everything is distorted and deformed ("Dry Bones"), the environment is dark and radioactive ("Tot", "Love Explosion") but you can feel a heart beating ("Clot"), a voice from afar makes its way through clouds of gray noise and screams desperately ("The Want", "Meanwhile"), but it’s not seeking help, it's calling us, yes, but not wanting us to rush in and save it, it wants us to experience how fascinating it can be to enter the labyrinth of a fragile and unstable mind. It takes us and leads us among the cobwebs hanging on memories of ended loves and forgotten friendships, it leaves us to wander alone and frightened, makes us believe we’re lost, takes us back, cradles us, goes inside us and pinches our hearts, and finally leaves us on the ground powerless with nothing but a great longing for rain.
