2006 was a tough year for the Futureheads.

After the success achieved with their self-titled debut, the British quartet encountered many difficulties with the follow-up "News & Tributes," unfairly dismissed by critics and a failure in terms of sales. This led the band, dropped by their label, to the brink of breaking up, reducing live performances to a minimum and disappearing for several months.

But just when it seemed like they were a closed case, a new single "Broke Up The Time" appeared online through their official website, available for free download (after Radiohead, dozens of bands began using the Web as a preferred distribution channel): an energetic track dominated by angular guitars indebted to both early Wire and Gang Of Four, which, however, does not stray far from what they have done in the past. As they say: a dignified return, accompanied by an extensive British tour in small university venues, but we expected something more.

The decisive third album, due out soon, will tell us if the Futureheads deserve our applause.
