The biggest problem for a Doors enthusiast is that their discography was missing a "live" album worthy of them. Indeed, "Absolutely Live", the most famous live album, only gives a taste of the greatness of the Doors on stage. Now, however, "In Concert" allows us to fully savor the greatness of the Doors and in particular, of course, of the "Lizard King," the "Resurrected Christ in Rock," one of the greatest geniuses of modern music: Jim Morrison.
This double CD comprises the entire "Absolutely Live", the most famous bootleg, "Alive She Cried", and various other rare pieces. "Absolutely Live" is already very famous: recorded between 1968 and 1970, it features the strong points of the medley "Alabama Song"-"Back Door Man"-"Love Hides"-"Five To One", the well-known Morrison poem, "The Celebration Of The Lizard", a very fierce version of "Break On Through", an epic "Soul Kitchen" and especially "When The Music's Over", possibly the most beautiful version ever, with Morrison stopping to shout "Shut Up!" at the applauding fans during a moment of silence in the song and dramatically altering the lyrics to dialogue with them.
But this album alone is not enough; much of the greatness of the Doors is missing, many of the most representative songs (calling them just songs is reductive, "works of art" would be more appropriate) are absent. CD 2 opens with an extremely lively and acclaimed "Roadhouse Blues", featuring an incredibly fast solo by Krieger, ending with one of Morrison's many clever interactions with the audience, this time focusing on astrology. Following this, among the various songs taken from "Alive She Cried", are "Light My Fire", swift and sharp, "Love Me Two Times", "The Unknown Soldier", and finally the masterpiece of masterpieces: taken from the film "Live at The Hollywood Bowl," here is a hallucinated and extended version of "The End", with the original lyrics almost entirely replaced by some of Morrison's poems and concluded with an absolutely lethal instrumental coda before returning to the initial theme; Morrison's voice is breathtaking and personally, every time I hear this track, I get a shiver down my spine. Anyone who loves the Doors must have this album.
