In 2004, Scotland was at the forefront of the global alternative pop-rock scene, just think of the phenomenon of Franz Ferdinand or the brand new Dogs Die In Hot Cars, but certainly one of the most prominent bands coming from this country is The Delgados.
"Universal Audio" is their fourth album, yet another work that confirms the absolute value of the band in the pop genre. Eleven catchy, cute, and elegant songs; but no surprises, no innovation, no forward step by the band. This record is so perfect that it ends up feeling too artificial, so well packaged that it feels soulless. A pity, because the previous Hate (2002) at least added massive orchestration to the songs, giving that extra touch of class and sonic sophistication that is missing in this record. On the positive side, the high quality of the tracks remains, and taken individually they are not bad at all: especially "Sink Or Swim" (sweet acoustic ballad) and "I Fought The Angels" (the most rock song of the album).
Striking as in previous works of The Delgados is the use of two voices: Emma Pollock's female voice is magnificent, Alun Woodward's male voice lacking in quality.
I recommend this album to those who want to listen to some well-made alternative pop, but for those looking to find something new in indie music, it's better to leave these Delgados alone or at least try the previous "Hate," which is by far a more interesting album.
