13 SECONDS, A MEASURE OF LIFE, AND THE DREAM HAD TO END

"The Only One" is the first single from the new album by The Cure, which will be released on September 13th (their thirteenth), and the first of a series of singles, released monthly (on the thirteenth of each month), available for streaming on their website (www.TheCure.com).

I must immediately say that it's quite striking to hear Robert Smith's voice in a "new" piece, and unfortunately, I also have to say right after, that the feeling of having put on "Friday I'm in Love" is very strong, and that the glory days of "Faith," "Pornography," and "Seventeen Seconds" are long gone.

The sounds are the worst of their long career, and the lyrics, as banal as ever, quickly kill the desire to listen to the album, disappointment and anger therefore, for a group that was comfortable in the dark but which, under the blinding and direct light of the sun, has shown all its limitations.

At this point, a reflection is obliged: Robert Smith is now a man in his fifties, continues to dye his hair and use lipstick and blush, continues to talk about love as if he were a 15-year-old boy, desperately tries to turn back time, uses tricks of all kinds, calls back Simon Gallup on bass, Porl Thompson on guitar, and Jason Cooper on drums, organizes colorful concerts with great scenic effects, puts together almost desperate marketing operations, but what stands out as most interesting about all this work is the opening band that plays before them, 65daysofstatic.

"Time slips away
and light begins to fade
and everything is quiet now
feeling is gone
and the picture disappears
and everything is cold now
the dream had to end
the wish never came true
and the girl
