The Profile

The Cleaners from Venus is the lo-fi pop project led by Martin Newell, formed in 1980. Known for bedroom-recorded albums, jangle guitars, minimal synths and a DIY cassette culture aesthetic, the project produced influential early 1980s recordings including Midnight Cleaners (1982).

Early Cleaners activity was centred on home 4-track recordings, DIY cassette duplication and hand-drawn covers. The project originally involved drummer Lol Elliott; after his departure Martin Newell continued the project with occasional collaborators. Midnight Cleaners was remastered and reissued in 2012 (as noted in the review).

A poetic, positive review of The Cleaners from Venus focused on the 1982 album Midnight Cleaners. The write-up highlights bedroom-recording lo-fi aesthetics, DIY cassette culture, and small-town Wivenhoe imagery. It frames the album as a high point of early Cleaners material and an antecedent to later bedroom-pop and lo-fi scenes.
