Hello everyone. This is my first deREVIEW I've ever done in my life. I was browsing this lovely site, when I searched among the titles... and I see there's not a single review on "Surrender" by the Chemical Brothers! At that point I asked myself, "How is this possible? Well, if no one has ever written it, I'll do it!" And so here I am.
"Surrender", Year 1999. If the chemical siblings had already made a mark with those two great albums "Exit Planet Dust" and the majestic "Dig Your Own Hole", with this album they became known all over the globe. It's with this album that they are elevated to "superstar DJs..." of world fame. It starts with the first song titled "Music: Response". A purely electronic song. Nothing more, nothing less. But it's when the first song is about to end that one does not expect to board a train of pure adrenaline energy. Second song. "Under The Influence". If you have a good stereo system at home or in the car, this song is a good way to test your setup. The initial sound of the song, which strongly resembles a plane flying low overhead, packaged with a pulsating bass, makes this one of the best songs on the album. At that point, a normal person might think... "but the album can't all be like this!" You don't even have time to finish the sentence before "Out Of Control" starts with that opening riff followed by a pulse that can only announce something good! And right after, you're already dancing around the house and humming the song... out of control...
To mention the most significant and famous songs (not that the others are any less), remember the now famous "Let Forever Be" in collaboration with Liam from Oasis who lends his voice to the song... What to say about this song. Even if commercial, it has sounds that are partly clear with electronic injections and distorted sounds. But then Ed and Tom thought it best to let the poor listener catch their breath... giving us two relaxing songs like "The Sunshine Underground" and "Asleep From Day". As the album ends and to the notes of "Asleep From Day"... almost like a lullaby... you're almost about to fall asleep... voilà you're back on the electro train... with "Got Glint?" with its enchanting bass... And then, there it is. Starting low.
Rhythm
Voice
Electronic injections.
HERE WE GO!... and if at this point you're still sitting and not dancing around the house... I don't know what could move you... "Hey Boy Hey Girl". The track opener song used excessively by all DJs around the globe. The song that MADE them famous around the globe. Something more charged and adrenaline-packed that until 1999 had not been heard yet... And the album closes with two other songs that are masterpieces, including "Dream On".
What can I say. I hope I've managed to capture the sensation I felt and still feel when I listen to this CD. Ladies and gentlemen. This is Surrender.
