The Profile

The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band are an English comedy-psychedelic group formed in the 1960s, famed for mixing vaudeville, trad jazz, pop, and surreal humor. Key figures include Vivian Stanshall and Neil Innes. Their UK hit ā€œI’m the Urban Spacemanā€ was produced by Paul McCartney (as Apollo C. Vermouth), and they appeared with The Beatles in Magical Mystery Tour and on TV’s Do Not Adjust Your Set.

Formed in the 1960s London art-school scene; core members included Vivian Stanshall, Neil Innes, Rodney Slater, Roger Ruskin Spear, and Legs Larry Smith. Signature blend of music hall, trad jazz, pop and psychedelia; notable for witty pastiche and theatrical live shows. Hit single: ā€œI’m the Urban Spacemanā€ (1968), produced by Paul McCartney under the pseudonym Apollo C. Vermouth.

Two glowing reviews celebrate the Bonzos’ witty, eccentric blend of pop, vaudeville and psychedelia. Gorilla is hailed as an arrangement masterclass bursting with brass, reeds and ukulele. The Doughnut in Granny’s Greenhouse leans pop-rock, with parodic rock/blues and avant-garde touches. Reviewers evoke a cloudlike, tea-time madness and praise the band’s legendary live spectacle.
