Sunflower is the more critically acclaimed of the two albums (This Whole World, etc.), but it's in Surf's Up that two of Brian Wilson's greatest masterpieces reside, as he was on the brink of embarking on a journey through the ocean of his isolated madness: Til' I Die and the title track of the album.
Listen to the first track at a high volume, preferably in early autumn, and you'll feel chills penetrating deep into your soul as Brian's voice sings "... I'm a cork on the ocean floating over a raging sea ..." Or the harmonic modulation of the Surf's Up choruses foreshadowed by Van Dyke Sparks' visionary lyrics.
You will discover that the Beach Boys (or Brian Wilson, but don't forget his brother Dennis with Be With Me and Little Bird in the lesser-known 20/20) have often undermined their talent, but when they fully embraced it, they reached heights from which they could dive into the clouds.
