The second half of the eighties represented a great deal for music, and metal in particular. Until not long before, all the Thrash-metal bands favored impact over technique in their sound, until, in 1986, someone decided to produce a work that, while still metal, emphasized the technical aspect (thus, many tempo changes, the bass no longer relegated to a supporting role, etc...), in short, a very cerebral work that demonstrated how even metal, already existing in various forms, could be appreciated through one of them. All of this, which was later termed by critics as Techno-thrash, was named Watchtower. From then on, the influence of the previously mentioned Texans hit many musicians worldwide like a fever, who in turn sought to express themselves musically through the aforementioned principles.
Two years later, with the arrival of 1988, many bands (Deathrow, Realm, Sieges Even, Mekong Delta, Blind Illusion, etc.) produced on that wave, very beautiful and significant works. One of them is this very Master Project Genesis (second and last release) by Target, a Belgian combo dedicated to a beautiful Techno-thrash, according to myself, one of the most beautiful yet unknown technical Thrash albums ever conceived in the history of metal.
The proposal of the combo in question is very balanced, as the drumming is quite varied and dynamic but never self-serving; the dialogue between the two guitars, fast and intricate, always chasing each other, is superb; the bass, with a somewhat mechanical sound, is always prominent, and the vocal performance, structured on rather high tones (we're talking about Techno-thrash, and vocals like this are peculiar to it), is very good, indeed, one of the most accomplished in the genre. The recording quality, considering that the work dates back to 1988, is excellent.
It's a pity that afterwards, nothing more was heard from Target. As for me, I hope that "someone" or "something" takes hold of the reissue operation, so that this little gem can be rediscovered.
