The Profile

Tamara de Lempicka (1898–1980) was a Polish painter associated with the Art Deco movement, best known for stylized portraits, nudes and glamorous depictions of modern women.

Born in Warsaw; rose to prominence in Paris in the 1920s and 1930s; associated with Art Deco portraiture and figurative painting.

The single review reads the painting as a bejewelled, sensuous Madonna, where maternal tenderness and refined surface treatment transform a commonplace image. The critic highlights De Lempicka's use of cold tones, a waxy/pastelized finish and precise, polished details. Overall the piece is seen as unexpectedly sweet and materially rich.
