Mezmerize:
- Soldier Side: it's an intro... SV
- Byob: the single that won't be released, or so the label said. This song has a very strong political sense, I really like the guitar solo at the beginning. Rating: 6.5
- Revenga: a little weak. That's all I have to say... Rating: 6
- Cigaro: the comeback song, and what a comeback. Starting with a song that hits you right away with "My c**k is much bigger than yours"! Rating: 6.5 for repetitiveness.
- Radio/Video: a beautiful song, very beautiful. One of my favorites in all of Mezmerize. Rating: 7--
- This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I'm On This Song: an amazing song, two incredibly intense minutes! Rating: 7 for the madness!!!
- Violent Pornography: very nice as a song. 6.5
- Question!: it almost seems like a progressive song from its start in the first 20 seconds. Here Serj prevails, finally, his voice remains undoubtedly that of the Serj of Chic N' Stu. An insane scream for an excellent song. 7+
- Sad Statue: "You and me / Will all go down in history with a / Sad Statue of Liberty / And a generation who didn't agree". Wonderful song, wonderful lyrics. 7.
- Old School Hollywood: perhaps the flaw of the CD. Too much electronics, too much Daron Malakian, this song gave me indigestion. Rating: 5.5
- Lost In Hollywood: concert song. Just read the lyrics. Good melody but... 6.
In conclusion:
A good album, but not at the levels of "Toxicity" where the band brought out the best of themselves with simply stunning songs. Not at the level of their debut where there was that element of surprise with these System of a Down. Perhaps on par with "Steal This Album", since it's a collection of previously discarded songs, and there's probably a reason they were discarded. However, "Mezmerize" fully met what I expected from this album and I am fully satisfied. Now there is suspense regarding "Hypnotize"... Perhaps the only flaw of the record is its length, really short. Thirty-six minutes for eleven songs... Approved.
BYOB is a classic SOAD track, with a syncopated verse and a chorus that opens up into an easy and melodic tune that sticks with you.
Two totally different voices, always on opposite tonalities blending together! The result is that the quality of the album indeed benefits from it!
If the whole album is like this, I’ll go skinny dipping in the Trevi Fountain...
Those expecting a Toxicity 2 will have to settle for 6-7 nice little tunes that will drive them crazy for the first 2 days...
Let’s clarify one thing right away: the lack of innovation in this album compared to the previous four is something that’s hard to forgive the System Of A Down for.
Mezmerize may not be System Of A Down’s best work, but it’s definitely a musically complete and enjoyable album with a clear message.
"B.Y.O.B is the masterpiece of the record for its immense anger."
"It’s precisely the soft/hard intertwining that makes this album unique in its genre."
Mezmerize is a bomb, which I would rather call a 'time bomb,' since it will take much longer to please you, but still devastating in its whirlpool of genres.
Each song represents a standalone creative peak, with its own personality and unique style, and also thanks to these qualities the CD will remain in your player for a long time.
