It was 1991: the year of great musical masterpieces. Nirvana released "Nevermind", My Bloody Valentine their "Loveless", Primal Scream "Screamadelica", and Massive Attack debuted with "Blue Lines". The Pixies bid farewell to their fans with their swan song "Trompe Le Monde".
Out of the mists of Oxford emerged these mysterious Swervedriver (a beautiful name that means something like "one who skids around a curve") with dark sounds but with guitars used as real razor strokes. The dark and melancholic voice, yet very warm, of Adi Newton, completed this mix of sounds and songs with a fundamentally pop vein, but marked by a striking feedback, perhaps more refined than the early Jesus And Mary Chain. Tracks like "Son Of Mustang Ford", "Sandblasted", "Rave Down", "Lead Me Where You Dare", and "Pile Up" revolutionized the era of English pop alongside works by fellow adventurers like Loop, Spacemen 3, My Bloody Valentine, and Pale Saints, often stagemates of our own.
"Raise" was truly a revolutionary album!!! Abrasive enough, but straight to the heart!
