Susan Tedeschi is a beautiful Italian-American girl raised in Massachusetts, who has been engaging with music since a young age. She explores blues with her high school band, gets passionate about soul in a Gospel choir, and ranges through the roots of American music by exploring various genres.
In 1999, she forms the Susan Tedeschi Band, in which she sings and plays the guitar.
Her voice is a mix of sweetness and energy, her way of playing the guitar is inspired by the big names of history; after all, nothing else can be expected since it was she and her band who opened concerts for Allman Brothers, B.B. King and occasionally for Mr. Dylan.
It can be said that nowadays Susan already has a remarkable career behind her, having released five albums and obtaining 3 Grammy nominations as the best modern blues performer and female vocalist.
"Hope and Desire" is the 2005 album and it is the most mature.
Complete with that warm tragic power of soul origin, Hope and Desire encapsulates everything that Susan's sound has to offer: acoustic guitars played in a slow and melancholic way, sad slides followed by simple phrases, all accompanied by a slow and dragging rhythm. In this case, we refer to "You've Got The Silver" a powerful blues exalted to the nth degree by the famous and well-accented Hammond organ.
Moving through songs like "Soul Of A Man" and "Lord Protect My Child," the predominant feature is the way of singing, much inspired by legendary black blues and soul singers from the dixieland: their typical way of accentuating vowels, accompanied by guitar and keyboard that only serve to accentuate to the nth degree the most important instrument: the vocal cords. Susan takes this teaching literally: the entire album revolves around her hoarse and often unruly voice, but which manages at the same time to touch the highest peaks of delicacy and grace, as exemplified by the fantastic "Sweet Forgiveness".
Nevertheless, the album also features more "electric" moments, with which the artist shows off her skills as a guitarist. The cheerful "Tired Of My Tears" and "Magnificent Sanctuary Band" serve as carefree interludes between songs.
Susan's talent is a sublime revelation of the 2000s, bringing a breath of fresh air yet still influenced by vintage.
