How can one describe emotions with words? How can one even begin to attempt to write them on a web page? But most importantly, how did Sunny Day Real Estate manage to create an album that borders on perfection, an album that can be and should always be listened to, regardless of mood or state of mind? Ladies and gentlemen, here we are not just facing a record, but the most beautiful emo album ever conceived...
"Diary" is the perfect name for this masterpiece, full of emotions and thoughts, just like a personal diary... This album is dated 1994, a time when the alternative scene was dominated by grunge and the more commercial punk rock... Well, Sunny Day Real Estate revolutionized everything. EVERYTHING.
Credit to them if today we have bands like Silverstein, Emery, or Taking Back Sunday, credit to them if today emo is so shamelessly known and established, (unfortunately, also so damn commercial). The album in question opens with "In Circles", a track characterized by a vocal style that alternates between melodic and almost screamed, with essential lyrics for future bands; it continues with "A Song About An Angel", with a spine-chilling intro, delicate arpeggios intertwined with riffs as sharp as blades, with lyrics that say: "Words. You are married to your pain. Although you hit me hard I come back". The tracks flow and gradually one becomes accustomed to the sensation that SDRE provide, alternating between moving, tear-jerking pieces and more aggressive tracks... the album ends, and one stops to reflect, perhaps lying down, gazing at the sky, with the thought that this is one of the most emotional and personal albums ever composed... yes, because this album, feels like the record made just for you, that album that seems to tell your story, your loves, your memories... all concentrated in a whirlwind of emotions called "Diary".
..in my life, I have never found an album like this, so sweetly lethal and so painfully moving... when the album is finished, you find yourself thinking... thinking about how a group of 4 guys managed to create, from nothing, an absolute masterpiece. Thank you, SDRE.
