THE REVIEW

It seems easy, but it’s not at all. You know how it is, I bought this record out of pure curiosity on the Internet some time ago. I found it on Ebay at a really negligible price. Who knows what these guys are doing? The Sunn 0))). Stuff I had only read a few reviews about here and there and had never listened to. Already the genre... Drone. Buzzing, hum. Well, I’d say we’re in for a treat. It seems to me that in this case, classifications really don’t matter at all.

The love, the passion (use whatever term you prefer) for this mistress called "Music" often and willingly drives me to buy records that you’ve never heard of before, that you don’t know, of which you know absolutely nothing. Then it’s your problem whether you got it right or not. The beauty is precisely in this. Anyway, I’ve also watched some live videos on Youtube of these crazies, but it doesn’t mean much. It’s not really a great preparation for listening to the record. Many claim that to approach this type of music?/non-music? and enjoy it fully, you have to "get really stoned" like wild boars. And wild boars in those conditions, as we know, are very dangerous. The rest is done by the sound flow. Now the point is that I don’t smoke cigarettes, let alone use "droning" substances. And I’ll tell you more: there’s no trusty dealer under my house who could supply me. So what?

I have the record here, it has arrived. But hey, three tracks three for almost sixty minutes sixty. I retreat to my little room, turn off the light and lower the blinds. I insert the CD into the player and wait. Really, I tell you and I repeat that I don’t know how to define the Sunn 0))), the Drone et similia. Maybe it’s not for me. There’s no drum (apart from some scattered sampling here and there in the second track, I think), melody not even to mention but I expected this. Ritual voices repeating obscure chants. But there are guitars... but not as we usually mean them. Catacombal and very deep notes that are reiterated and repeated endlessly with some imperceptible variation. By God, I’ve listened to this record over and over, and each time it’s been a tour de force. I mean, it’s not that I hated it, but it didn’t exalt me either. It only left me disoriented and with a vague sense of anguish while I was listening to it.

Is it really possible then that you have to be heavily drugged to understand records like this??? I didn’t get it, and so I think yes. It’s also worth mentioning that my ears are not used to this type of sound, but damn there’s a limit to everything. Oh, Joe Preston and Julian Cope are also among others. So "White 1" goes straight into my collection under the category "Inexplicable and mysterious cases". With all due respect to the Drrrrrroooooonnnneeeeee! At least I tried, oh!
