This time you won't fool me, Aaron; this time I am ready.

Just one listen, a single listen; and I try to jot down some lines about Sumac's debut from February 2015.

A chilling work, that presses, that compacts, that crushes.

It reduces you to dust, it annihilates you, it bends you in half, it breaks you.

An instrumental intro and outro; in between four endless barrages that are so imposing, obsessive, colossal.

The darkest early Isis clashing with the tribalness of Neurosis and the raw ferocity of Carne di Dio (praised be the Godflesh).

Sounds constructed to repeat the same guitar riff endlessly; a six-string set above the other instruments.

Bass and drums build a bruised rhythmic carpet around it that causes further damage.

Harmful, exasperating, unsettling Sumac.

In the production, the presence of Kurt Ballou from Converge is noticeable.

The cover is a splash of blood that stains and dirties the scene.

And finally the voice; or rather the growl, so dense, evil, tremendous. Like a journey into the Capitoline catacombs.

I am at the end of the 13 minutes and 41 seconds of the title track, the penultimate track.

I surrender, I can't go beyond; I can't listen to the last track.

I am thirsty, I am afraid, I am tired and I must stop immediately.

Sweet dreams GenitalGrinder.
