Ahhh... let's listen to this blessed CD that has been talked about so much and which sold so well in 2007 thanks to "chart-busting" singles like "About You Now," a mega success with four consecutive weeks at the top of the European chart.
As the critics claimed, is it one of the greatest pop albums of the year? Let's see... Well, let's thoroughly dissect this album: at the opening, like every pop album worth its salt, there's the first single just to give a triumphant opening. Okay, I agree. The second song is a mediocre dance song worthy of people like Hanna Montana and that assorted rubbish. Three-quarters failed. Moving on to the third song, "Denial". The album picks up, nice rhythm, average lyrics. But the song itself is beautiful. Okay. Fourth song... um... Is it a song, or did we stumble onto the intro of a showgirl dance routine? Did my radio suddenly tune to a terrifying channel highly advised against? Oh no. It's the CD going on. Oh dear heaven. The album is heading back to a dead zero. It's a sort of trash dance shamefully mixed with the worst pop sounds. The chorus? The song is called "My Love Is Pink" and the chorus keeps the "My Love Is..." and... poof! The color changes! My love is orange, my love is brown, my love is white... better skip. Fifth track... ah! A slow one, usually the highlights of their CDs. Um... nice voices, but the song is a bit bland in itself... anyway, better than the previous track. Well, meaning more bad than good... but let's move on. Sixth song "Back When". Oh dear, save us. What is it? The theme of Heidi?! Did they write it with their feet? Did they call Britney to write it for them? Alas, I'm forced to skip again. I hear the "crack!" of the zero breaking in my head. Number 7 "Surprise". Uh... the start is promising. Nice, but a bit repetitive. Oh well, slowly we climb back up. Number 8 is "Back Down," a sort of "electronic reggae" that exalts each member's boyfriend in the lyrics. Not bad, really. At least in this song, we can fully hear each member's voice. Track nine... "Mended By You". A ballad introduced by violins. No. They are computerized. Oh well. Decent. Nothing new, but good; at least the piano seems real to me. Song 10, on the other hand, is "Open The Door." Meh. The kind of song you'll hear on the radio once in your life but it leaves no impression (pleasant or not) and will erase itself from your memory any moment... Number 11, on the other hand, is "Undignified"... Not bad. And what’s with these lyrics? "When you love the devil, you sell your soul and it's hard to make him go"... but is it a pop cover from a satanist? Selling your soul to the devil? Meh! Let's move on.... Eh? Already done?! Uhm... boff.... So here I have to give the final verdict? Okay...
So... let's say that compared to the gems "Angels With Dirty Faces" and "Three" it is a CD well below average (and I haven't forgotten "Taller In More Ways," because from there we noticed that the image had taken over)... yet we expected something more... maybe next time? Let's hope. Pity, though.
P.s.: I just want to add one thing... let no one come and tell me that the CD was bad due to the departure of that Mutya, that among smoking, alcohol, nursing, and being dropped by the record label go retrieve that one... she's only 22 and already seems to compete with Carrà... let's see if she hits menopause at 30... let's leave her where she is then...
