Sufjan Stevens, Nico Muhly, Bryce Dessner and James McAlister

Musical Group

A collaborative project involving Sufjan Stevens (singer-songwriter), Nico Muhly (contemporary classical composer), Bryce Dessner (guitarist/composer, member of The National) and James McAlister (drummer/multi-instrumentalist). The collaboration produced the 2017 album Planetarium, released on 4AD.

Planetarium was released in 2017 on 4AD. The project combines songwriting, contemporary classical composition and orchestral/ambient arrangements; individual members are publicly known for their respective work in indie/folk (Sufjan Stevens), contemporary classical (Nico Muhly), and rock/composition (Bryce Dessner) and as a multi-instrumentalist/drummer (James McAlister).

A nuanced review of Planetarium (2017), a collaborative concept album blending neo-classical, ambient and orchestral elements around astronomical themes. The album is praised for its ambition and unity but noted as occasionally pretentious. Best approached as a single, cohesive work.

For:Listeners of contemporary classical, ambient, experimental music and fans of Sufjan Stevens and The National.

Sufjan Stevens could have been the most influential and considered author of the last twenty or thirty years. He probably has been, and still is, but without a doubt, some of his choices highlight more than his skill as a songwriter and musician, what makes him uniquely ambitious among contemporary authors.
