"you say what you want to say
your diamonds are drops of rain
your smile is your credit card
and your currency is your love
and the morning is for you
and the air is free
and the birds sing for you
and your positivity"
Nine years after "Suede" comes this new creation from Brett Anderson and company. David Bowie remains their great love, no doubt about it (see "Astrogirl") even though the sounds become a bit more incisive at times, reminiscent of Shed Seven or the more intense works of Smiths (!). As the lyrics and title of the debut track of the album suggest, they have tried to infuse a lot of positivity into the tracks of the CD, starting with Anderson's reassuring and more mature voice, having shed the androgynous guise. Not to be missed is "One Hit To The Body," whose words are used so subtly that you hurt yourself when touching them:
"there’s a million constellations
up in the make believe sky
and a million dead end situations
you could leave behind"
An invitation to look forward and not backward. To think of a new morning, not last night. To see the sun rise without thinking of yesterday's sunset.
"'A New Morning' thus represents a worthy conclusion for Suede."
"Brett delivers a stunning vocal performance, enriched by a celestial falsetto in the refrain of 'Astrogirl'."
