Never were a cover and title more truthful. Inflammable Material is indeed an incendiary album, both in content and form. With this album released in 1979, they have brought to light one of the best punk records ever. Raw and immediate rock’n’roll from the Belfast four that makes bodies sway and stirs consciences.
Led by singer and guitarist Jake Burns, who thanks to this album will become one of the most credible icons of the punk movement, they will be interpreters of the drama of their land occupied by the Brits, cursed countless times in the lyrics, and devastated by the hatred between Protestants and Catholics, servants of the English and republicans.
Burns' lyrics are spat out with unspeakable rage by a voice that is like sandpaper, with guitars completing the work, more abrasive than ever. Suspect Device, Wasted Life, White Noise, Law and Order, the anthem Alternative Ulster, and the mistreated reggae of Johnny Was should be in the discography of every lover of rock that is most barricade and streetwise. They will never reach these levels again, but with this album they will remain in history. Dedicated to those who believe that Blink 182 is a punk band.
