Since the early '80s, Stevie Wonder has undoubtedly shifted his music towards a less 'soul' and more 'pop' genre. The sounds are also different compared to the albums of the previous decade. Listening to "In Square Circle," the difference is indeed noticeable compared to Stevie's works from the '70s. This is not necessarily a weakness; it is a sign of a style that has physiologically evolved.
This album arrived in 1985, that is, one year after the tremendous success of the soundtrack for "La Signora in Rosso" ("The Woman in Red"), which with the song that has now become one of the most famous of the last century, "I Just Called To Say I Love You," earned him an Oscar. It's impossible to replicate the sales success of the previous work. "In Square Circle" is an enjoyable album with easy listening that contains 10 tracks, all very catchy. The first is "Part-time Lover," an extremely rhythmic song, one of the most successful on the album. Also noteworthy: the splendid ballad "Overjoyed," the fast-paced "Spiritual Walkers," and the beautiful "Land of LA LA" with lyrics about the music world. There is no need to grasp for elevated musical depth, which, unlike other albums, isn't present here; it remains, however, an album enjoyable even on the first listen.
