Stephen William Hawking (1942–2018) was a British theoretical physicist, cosmologist and author known for work on black holes, singularities and for popular science books that brought complex ideas to a wide audience.

Hawking held the Lucasian Professorship of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge (1979–2009), proposed what is known as Hawking radiation (black hole evaporation), was diagnosed with a motor neurone disease (ALS) in the early 1960s, and used a speech synthesizer for communication.
