It's 2007 when Spoon, an intriguing Texan quartet, releases their sixth studio album, following the already excellent "Gimme Fiction", confirming themselves as one of the most interesting bands in today's music scene.
Led by Britt Daniel, second guitarist and singer, our Spoons craft what is probably their best work, concentrated in just over half an hour. "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga" is indeed an essential work, driven by "sixties" melodies sung by a gritty voice and pounding rhythmic base, often accompanied by a piano, as in the Beatles-esque "Don't Make Me A Target", or by brass as in "You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb". Also interesting is the tribute to The Natural History, with the wonderful cover "Don't You Evah", while the ballad "Underdog" and the clap-happy (pardon the neologism) "Finer Feelings" vie for the best tracks of the album. Adding to this mix, with the inclusion of more experimental songs (see Wilco) such as the darker "The Ghost Of You Lingers" and the Hispanic "My Little Japanese Cigarette Case", the guys from Austin brush against (or achieve) a masterpiece.
Our album is thus a colorful work, simple, that stretches from the typical Indie Rock to Beatles Pop Rock and even approaches Art Rock.
Excellent.
