The Sound of Defeat
What does defeat sound like? Primarily the moral one, which pertains to our being, triggered by events big or small in our lives, making us feel like crap, even just for an afternoon or a day. But they seem like an eternity... I'm talking about that unpleasant sensation that accompanies mistakes, especially those we fail to notice we're making (or refuse to admit we've made), repeated culpably over the years, which accumulate like fresh snow on frozen ground. And then at a certain point, the warmth arrives. And the snow melts. And you're in deep trouble, the real stuff. And, unfortunately, you're not on top of the mental avalanche descending the slope of your emotional being, you're already at the bottom. And you have all the time to see the end coming without any escape route.
But just as the end approaches... a smile appears (or perhaps more aptly a grimace). Not a mocking one, but a resigned one, from someone who finds a humorous angle in their own downfall... Secure in the knowledge that the wheel of karmic retribution will never truly break and that, even if we reincarnate as some inferior entity, we will still be alive. And if it won’t be like before, it will at least be another ‘before,’ better or worse, it doesn't matter. The important thing is not to end, to leave a piece of wood under the door to let the light in during the night, however long it may be.*
*(Freely inspired by the feelings evoked by listening to the new Spiritualized; which is equally mournful, sad, moderately hopeful, absolutely cynical, probably painful, certainly beautiful, perhaps among the best since "Ladies And Gentlemen We're Floating In Space” of '97. Also already among the favorite albums of this 2018)
