The Profile

Spiritual Beggars are a Swedish stoner/hard rock band formed in 1992 by guitarist Michael Amott. The early trio with Spice (vocals/bass) and Ludwig Witt (drums) set a Kyuss-meets-70s template, later enriched by Per Wiberg’s keyboards. Over time the group shifted toward classic hard rock, with vocals passing to Janne Christoffersson and later Apollo Papathanasio.

Recognized as pioneers of Sweden’s stoner/70s revival, with ties to Carcass and Arch Enemy (Amott), Opeth (Wiberg), and Grand Magus (Christoffersson). Key albums highlighted in reviews include the 1994 debut, Another Way to Shine (1996), Mantra III (1998), Ad Astra (2000), Demons (2005), Return to Zero (2010), and Earth Blues (2013).

Reviews chart Spiritual Beggars’ path from Kyuss-tinged stoner roots to a cleaner hard-rock drive. Early albums (debut, Another Way to Shine, Mantra III) earn strong praise; Ad Astra is hailed. Demons is solid if uneven, Return to Zero divisive, Earth Blues steadier and more focused. Guitars and vintage keyboards define their signature sound.
