Perhaps Scott "Wino" Weinrich did not invent Doom rock.
Perhaps he merely took that block of slate, black and solemn as the march of an electric funeral, born from Iommi's blunt fingertips, and set it to melt in the light of a sun trapped in a bottle, in the warmth of a desert or a bonfire of marijuana leaves.
The monolith melted into a multicolored puddle, a warm sludge that clings to your ankles and slowly starts to pull you down, like a hypnotic vortex of some sticky black fluid ("Fang"). Like dense mud, Wino then made it evaporate into a braid of fragrant grey smoke, to inhale and keep as close to the heart as possible, to be moved with measured psychedelic digressions ("Sea Legs") and brief cosmic promenades.
Of that compact and seemingly unassailable block, he preserved the soul, spared the rocky core, the kernel with its rough and fuzzy walls ("Cosmic Artifact", "Powertime"). But he sculpted it into new and visionary shapes, where sophisticated wah-wah creepers and southern-flavored guitar curlicues found fertile ground ("No Hope Goat Farm"), and his voice, hoarse and nasal, which often reminds of Ozzy’s, yet never an unabashed imitation, could lie down and feel at ease.
And, suddenly, in his hands, Doom rock ceased to be just the slow and dark succession of vaguely bluesy rhythms, sepulchral tunings, pentatonics, and diminished fifths, and became now a sweet and very sad music, made of twilight arpeggios ("Dead Love"), psycho-decadent sonnets ("Lost Sun Dance"), now a rapid chase of storm clouds, a frenetic, punkish succession of chords on an incandescent guitar neck ("Kill Ugly Naked").
Perhaps Scott "Wino" Weinrich did not invent Doom rock. Certainly, with "Jug Fulla Sun" ('99), the first full-length by Spirit Caravan, he took it by the hand and carried it where it had never been before.
"From the warm unknown
Into the cold beyond
Messagge of spirit
Is what's drivin me on
Climbing through the sea
On a magic craft from a sacred tree"
