THE REVIEW

The first Sonic Youth album I bought was "Experimental Jet Set, Trash And No Star". I was thirteen years old, only listened to Nirvana and a bit of Italian singer-songwriters (De André, Vecchioni, De Gregori, Bertoli...) and I found it unlistenable. The album of this strange band didn't captivate me even though I tried to like it because Kobain wore their t-shirts!!! Now, eleven years later, I realize how many things I couldn't understand... Thurston and the others have churned out a myriad of significant albums, they've been on the scene for about twenty-five years, yet their latest work is not crap!!! Think of Marlene Kuntz, Litfiba, Metallica, Afterhours, Red Hot Chili Peppers, all bands that preferred to produce the worst of the worst rather than disband (do you remember Elettromacumba by Litfiba?! AHAHAHAHAH). The new Sonic Youth album is good pop, and considering the magnificent career of these musicians, I would give it 5 stars. The album itself is worth no more than three stars, and in my opinion, it is their worst album.

Listen to it anyway, it's much better than so much crap that's passed off as quality music!!! And I'm not addressing those who already know Sonic Youth... Quite the opposite... This is an album to start from to get lost in the mazes of sonic schizophrenia... and never come back!!!!!!!!!!!!

The review reflects on the author's initial struggle to appreciate Sonic Youth and acknowledges their influential career. 'Rather Ripped' is seen as a decent pop album but the band's weakest effort, rated three out of five stars. Despite this, it's recommended as a good entry point into Sonic Youth's music. The reviewer contrasts it positively against other bands producing weaker later works.

Sonic Youth do not lose themselves, they do deny themselves, yes, but as they’ve always done, they manage to rebuild themselves.

Never more effectively than now, Sonic Youth describe and build a world that is chaos, precisely because every song, as such, is now chaos in itself.
