Bergen, Norway 10/11/2003 Time 2:34 AM - The wind is blowing fiercely among the houses. The water on the asphalt has frozen...
Sondre: "...so then you tell me how to make a good E.P. so that people notice it this time, not just the same old few!"
Sondre's Dad: "You've always been stubborn! I've already told you that success, money, recognition will come... but with time. Don't be in a hurry; and besides, if I'm not mistaken, some magazines already spoke well of you last year, am I wrong?"
S: "But do you think, even the girls will start to notice me?"
SD: "Well, I don't know. You've always been a bit plain, but who knows, maybe because you're able to write great music... sure, in the end, you've got good charisma... we'll see."
S: "Yes, but you still haven't answered my question about the E.P."
SD: "Well then, first of all it must be a product that introduces you even to those who have known nothing about you until now: It's obligatory to include in the album some tracks from your debut LP, perhaps in an acoustic version... there, yes, let's say the 4 most beautiful songs of "Faces Down" presented live and 4 brand new ones!"
S: "Yes. Great! I hadn't thought of that. It's a nice idea, brrrr it's cold... and which would be the "old ones" to include?"
SD: "The best ones! That is to say, Dead Passengers, You Know So Well, Sleep On Needles, and Night And Day; provided they are all presented in a new guise: just your voice and the acoustic guitar but nothing else. There should also be some rhythm changes that slightly alter the structure of the song and manage to convince even more those who already knew you in the past; mmmh let me think..."
S: "Got it! I'll record Dead Passengers in a mix of bossa nova and jazz with the guitar strings just gently plucked, You Know So Well like a David Gray ballad, while Sleep On Needles I'll do with some mellow rock. There we are! And as for the new songs, what do you think about including I Know I Know?"
SD: "Yes, theoretically the sound of the new ones, from what you let me hear yesterday, is still connected to Faces Down, but it's much lighter: a kind of indefinable blues with many South American influences and 7 chords, with Beatles-style lyrics accompanied by some video game sounds. Living Lounge is the perfect example."
S: "OK. I think tomorrow I'll call Astralwerks and we'll start discussing the production details. Thanks for the advice dad. Good night."
Time 2:58 AM - It has stopped snowing.
