When you listen to "Gebbia," Alan Sorrenti comes to mind. Yes, the one from "Figli delle stelle." Then comes "Altro," a cover of Drupi's "Sereno è." A remix where, almost rapping, it reinvents a classic of Italian pop. Tacky pop? Not at all… One, because both belong to a period when, unlike today, perhaps there was a bit more freedom, and the question in the title of this debut EP (Are we really free?) was probably unnecessary. Two, because both Drupi and Sorrenti are two beautiful chapters of healthy Italian pop that bypassed Sanremo and went straight into people's homes and car stereos, without the need for TV, Pippo Baudo, or various nonsense. That's it, Sol21 bypasses potential mainstream pop prejudices with pop songs that seem to occasionally come from Scandinavia, songs that Kings Of Convenience could have written if they had been born in the 80s. Funk-pop guitars, keyboards that will surely please fans of Battiato's 80s period. And throughout, lyrics never thrown in, never trite. Lyrics very critical of our Bel (yes? Beautiful?) Paese. Lyrics that intelligently play with the clichés of Italian songs (love, sea, sun) managing not to fall into the clichés themselves, but rather to revolutionize the final result. Intelligent and enjoyable.
