On her third outing, Soccer Mommy still exudes her youthful essence, as this album, like its predecessors, is somewhat unripe but certainly more refined in song structure and arrangements. It’s an album I would have loved to enjoy as a teenager; now it stirs up a bit of nostalgia. But this is something I could say about any lo-fi and chamber pop-flavored record, the kind you listen to on a late afternoon, in your room, after finishing your studies. Indeed, the themes of the lyrics, almost always personal, greatly echo that mood of a Netflix series set in those small American towns with a few thousand residents, with houses featuring backyard gardens, and streets meant for bicycle rides. Besides singing, Soccer Mommy is also a talented guitarist; thus, the arrangements almost always rely on electric guitar chords with overdrive, sometimes open, and at times keeping the rhythm in palm mute. There is also a bit of experimentation, which is very welcome, where the guitars timidly become shoegaze, and the chord progressions are not always typical of classic pop.
The album is therefore overall quite pleasant to listen to, especially if you miss the school days or feel nostalgic for situations you've never even experienced, but which TV series continuously feed us, especially in recent years.
