The SlobberPup return with the second chapter of their powerful, psychedelic, and noise music saga, "Pole Axe" featuring a new lineup bolstered by the presence of the master avant-garde saxophonist Mats Gustafsson.
Two years after the release of "Black Aces," the acclaimed debut album, SlobberPup presents their second work titled "Pole Axe".
The nucleus of the original lineup, consisting of celebrated American keyboardist and organist Jamie Saft (JS Trio, New Zion Trio, John Zorn's Masada, Merzbow, The New Standard, The Spanish Donkey), legendary American guitarist and free musician Joe Morris, and Hungarian drummer Balazs Pandi (Wadada Leo Smith, Jamie Saft, Merzbow), is here augmented by the presence of the titan of avant-garde saxophone, Swedish Mats-Olof Gustafsson.
The artistic relationship between Jamie Saft, Joe Morris, and Balazs Pandi has progressively developed on RareNoiseRecords since late 2012: Saft and Pandi played on Metallic Taste Of Blood; all three are members of SlobberPup and played with Wadada Leo Smith on Red Hill; Saft and Morris played in Plymouth (with Mary Halvorson, Chris Lightcap, and Gerald Cleaver) and on The Spanish Donkey (with Mike Pride).
Recorded at the beginning of December 2013 at Jamie Saft's Potterville International Sound Studio in the stunning Catskill Mountains, Pole Axe harnesses this chemistry and combines it with the tumultuous, monolithic, yet psychedelic energy of Mats Gustafsson's saxophone, expressing itself in three long-form free tracks. This journey, beginning with the torrential "Pole Of Combustible Memory", continues with the equally extended "Bring Me My Desire And Arrows To Shoot" (a title inspired by William Blake) and concludes with Incendiary Axe, is a stream of consciousness with chiaroscuro tones, a continuum of images on 35mm analog film.
Inexorable visions follow visions, while variations in temperature and structure flow into one another with hardly any rest. The infinite depth of interaction between Saft and Morris, exemplified by the dizzying dance conducted by a multitude of analog synthesizers and organs alongside the guitar, integrates into Pole Axe with Gustafsson's multifaceted saxophone sound, supported by Pandi whose drumming is sometimes restrained, sometimes tumultuous.
In this instance, the manifestation of the notion of glacial time, theorized by Morris, can also be perceived—a state of deep listening among musicians when time is perceived by all but does not need to be openly declared. Everyone has internalized the pulse of time, but everyone's attention is oriented toward the grand arc of the music.
