After approximately three years since the release of Iowa, the nine masked men from Des Moines have returned with a more mature work than ever...
14 tracks of pure torment for a long descent into darkness and the recesses of the human mind.
The lyrics are metaphorical, distressing, no longer rage or madness, but the cold mind of a maniac, subliminal verses, fear, love, illusion...
Musically, more melodic and rhythmic, they offer us a work that, in my opinion, is much darker and psychologically violent than the previous ones.
A return to melodicity that disrupts the die-hard fans of the previous albums, a true spit in the face of commercialization. With an even heavier work, Slipknot would indeed have attracted the mass of teenagers who guaranteed their success with the anti-commercial album par excellence: Iowa, instead, this is a dark album for Connoisseurs.
Despite everything, even this time Slipknot have demonstrated their musical value, with the wonderful voice of Corey guiding and a fascinating rhythm punctuated by the drumming of #1...
The heavy guitars in the manner of Iowa, stand out with numerous solos, which, even if somewhat foreign to the context, enrich the composition.
Meanwhile, the percussion of Shawn Crahan and Chris Fehn has become more important, sometimes unleashing into precise military marches.
The role of Sid Wilson #0, the DJ, is decidedly in the background, perhaps a deliberate move to try to break free from the nu-metal in which Slipknot has always been confined and which does not really align with Slipknot's ideals of anti-commercialization.
Ultimately, an impeccable work determined to amaze anyone who underestimated the band, with more melodic and digestible pieces, yet also powerful and renewed as in their old style.
Something tremendously dark and murderous, watch your back... Slipknot is back...
