After the marvelous "Slipknot" and the brutal (yet excellent) "Iowa", the masked nine from Des Moines return with "Volume 3: The Subliminal Verses". Those who were expecting another "Iowa" will certainly be disappointed. In reality, Slipknot only wanted to express their "ideas" differently from the previous two albums (three, considering Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat.).
Everything starts with PRELUDE 3.0, where it's immediately noticeable how Corey Taylor's voice expresses suffering and unease. We move forward with THE BLISTER EXISTS, where guitarist Mick Thompson delivers an excellent riff, supported by the god of drumming, Joey Jordison. DUALITY is a great track, while (surprise!!!), we find songs where the acoustic guitar is present (CIRCLE, DANGER-KEEP AWAY, and the second part of VERMILLION). These three melodic songs, however, highlight Corey's phenomenal voice.
Many have criticized Slipknot just for the fact that the nine from Iowa wanted to make more money with Volume 3. Assuming that "Iowa" and "Slipknot" themselves sold quite a bit, this criticism doesn't hold up, because, even if different from the hard songs of "Iowa", there are still quite heavy tracks like THREE NIL and the fabulous PULSE OF THE MAGGOTS.
A flaw can be found in the, in my opinion, too clean and precise production, which diminishes the "importance" of the guitar sound.
"Volume 3: The Subliminal Verses" is another pearl that adds to the previous two masterpieces, and those who criticize it are only those who do not accept changes from a band.
