Official debut of Slipknot, the most over-the-top of the so-called nu metal bands. Reportedly inspired by Slayer, Sepultura, Kiss, Fear Factory, Biohazard, Korn, and Deftones, the guys with the noose offer the general public a new form of non-music, consisting largely of guitar riffs, fast drumming, and bursts of electronics, where it's unclear whether the singer is screaming or rapping. Their songs, the various "(sic)", "Eyeless", "Surfacing", "Tattered and Torn", "Me Inside", "Liberate", implicitly criticize the blandness of American suburbia and the hypocrisy of generation 2.0. The same two singles, "Wait and Bleed" and "Spit It Out", made up of screams and noise more than technique, already share little to nothing with other genre tracks. Those who say metal died in the nineties might be right.
