THE REVIEW

After listening to "The Day Is My Enemy," the latest effort from The Prodigy, I was captivated by the style showcased by Jason Williamson, the singer of the duo I'm about to talk about, on the track "Ibiza".

Hailing from the streets of Nottingham, UK, or rather, from its rawest pubs.

The duo was formed in 2007 by Williamson, influenced by the Mod subculture, Guns N' Roses, Rave, Black Metal, and Wu-Tang Clan, who soon joined forces with his friend Simon Parfrement. A few years later, the latter left his role as DJ in the project (continuing to play a very important role as their photographer and producer), making way for Andrew Fearn.

This is their eighth work (!) and it perfectly demonstrates the duo's intentions and sounds: Fearn manages to create bases strongly inspired by Grime, Punk, and Dancehall where the leading lady is the bass line sent into a cathartic rather than danceable loop, creating a venomous mix with the vitriolically profane lyrics of Williamson (harshly targeted at capitalism, unemployment, and society in general) shouted in an East Midlands dialect as if in a heated discussion in one of the aforementioned raw pubs, generating a turpiloquio Sprechgesang.

It is difficult to categorize this unique style... but I'll try: Shaun Ryder (Happy Mondays) doing quasi-Rap with a Punk/Oi! vocal style on a Public Image Ltd. track altered with a hint of Grime.

Key Markets, the eighth album by UK duo Sleaford Mods, showcases a unique blend of grime, punk, and dancehall. Jason Williamson delivers harsh, profane lyrics targeting capitalism and society, matched with Andrew Fearn's innovative bass-heavy production. The album captures a raw, pub-style energy reflecting their Nottingham roots. Its distinctive sound defies easy categorization but is praised for its intensity and cathartic delivery.

They appeared with The Prodigy on Ibiza and are the subject of the documentary Sleaford Mods – Invisible Britain (2015).
