In the sunny and renowned boulevard of the second half of the '80s, Frank Ferrana was experiencing the most shining and decadent moment of his life. The rock dream, which had driven him to leave the fields of Idaho, and for which he had fought and suffered for the last ten years of his life, had finally materialized in all its forms.
This is where "Heroin Diaries" takes its cue, from that specific moment on Nikki Sixx would jot down his life and emotions. Years and trends passed, and only in 2007 did this concept see the light of day, drawing from that source of 'memories'.
The songwriting is represented by phrases and feelings from the 'manuscript', or at least that's what we are led to believe, and from that fascinating starting point, the thirteen tracks that make up the collection develop.
There are excellent moments, "X-Mas in Hell", "Tomorrow", "Heart Failure" and big ballad "Accidents Will Happen", and I say excellent not because they're trying to bring us the new "Wild Side", but because somehow they SCRATCH. In my opinion, this kind of sound has to scratch, it has to stay in your head, even with a damn, stupid, and trivial chorus, or for a driving riff, but it has to hit you in the forehead, rot in your brain.
And then there are blander sections, repeated offerings, "Intermission", "Pray For Me", "Permission", which if you have Courvoisier and a thong in your hands are powerful, but if you've just been notified of a speed camera, they objectively break the balls. Musically, even from experience, we stand on medium-high standards, which does not necessarily mean displaying "Van Halen"-like virtuosities.
Swag and charming, grim and good-looking, street rockers in step with the times. Considered by too many as "hair" ghosts, at least it must be acknowledged that "Billboard", and its related charts, have nevertheless promoted them.
FOUR STARS: They bring conviction, we bring passion.
