The Profile

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) was a Scottish author and physician, creator of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, and writer of detective, adventure, and science fiction tales, including the Professor Challenger series.

Born in Edinburgh in 1859; knighted in 1902; created Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson; first Holmes novel A Study in Scarlet (1887); died in 1930.

A single, sharp review hails Doyle’s craftsmanship and moody settings while skewering Holmes’s arrogance and the formulaic rhythm of the short stories. The Hound of the Baskervilles stands out for its Gothic moor, tension between logic and superstition, and a tightly woven mystery.
