The Profile

Simply Red are a British soul/pop group formed in Manchester in 1985, led by singer Mick Hucknall. They broke through with Holding Back the Years and reached massive European success with A New Flame and Stars, amid frequent lineup changes and Hucknall’s firm creative control.

Holding Back the Years topped the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1986. Stars became a huge European bestseller. Key producer Stewart Levine helmed Picture Book, A New Flame and Stars. Notable members include Fritz McIntyre (keyboards), Heitor T.P. (guitar) and Gota Yashiki (drums/programming).

DeBaser’s reviews trace Simply Red from the hungry debut Picture Book through the polished A New Flame and blockbuster Stars, to the contentious, electronic-leaning Life. Mick Hucknall’s voice and control loom large, with Stewart Levine’s production and key players (Fritz McIntyre, Heitor T.P., Gota Yashiki) shaping the sound. Praise peaks on the late-80s/early-90s run; later reworks like Simplified divide opinion.
