"Sparkle In The Rain" has the daunting fate of following "New Gold Dream," the iconic album of the eighties, and it does so with flying colors.
It is certainly different from the previous album, but Simple Minds have always composed in a way that prevents repetition.
The rock sounds blend with electronics in an excellent manner with Mel Gaynor and Steve Lillywhite, the producer of the album, imprinting the aforementioned qualities onto the record.
It's challenging to determine which songs are the best on the album, but if I had to choose, I would say "Book Of Brilliant Things" and "East At Easter". The former is characterized by McNeil's soft keyboards and Burchill's rhythmic-solo embellishments; the latter by Burchill's escalating riff that culminates in Gaynor's roll that makes the piece burst... fantastic!
"Up On The Catwalk", "Speed Your Love To Me", "Waterfront"—three super hits that complete an unmissable album with an exceptional live performance that is in some ways unique.
