3 guys, an EP, and Iceland. "In Line," the name of the EP, has been very recently released (produced in the UK) and contains 3 tracks from their latest album (currently available only in Iceland;)) and 2 new songs played and recorded live. Silt and their noise-pop strongly convince from the first listen, in my case live as support for Sparta, and since then they have hypnotized me, forcing me, much to the delight of my neighbors, to repeated and for them obsessive daily listens of the CD. It had been several months (since QOTSA, to be precise) since I last experienced "love at first listen," the kind that keeps the songs in your mind even when you're not listening to them, that makes you want to pick up your guitar to accompany their music, and finally the kind that impatiently leaves you awaiting their next release. In their minimalist sound, they combine in a compelling mix what I most seek in the current indie scene, namely sweet and soft arpeggios that grow until they explode into powerful melodic noise distortions (excellently expressed thanks to Heidar's Fender Stratocaster - the singer/guitarist -), a beautiful voice capable of never boring you and following lively rhythm changes, as well as the (counter)tempo and full sounds of the drums and bass. And finally, the almost complete absence of the typical electronic and digital effects of recent years. Those who love the lightness of Pavement and the Afghan Whigs are well served with the Icelandic Silt! In Line is also the name of the opening track, potentially the perfect single, but my favorite is without a shadow of a doubt "The Walk," track no. 3, which for over 5 minutes, with those clean/distorted guitar and vocal changes, magnetically seduces you. Less melodic and more rhythmic are the last two tracks, "Throat" and "Lay Your Body Down" played live, which somewhat remind of Shellac or Girls Against Boys without ever losing the creative character and pleasant voice that distinguish the first tracks of the EP. Between us: Silt are absolutely a "Geheimtip," a gem tip for all lovers of analog and minimalist indiepop. If they continue like this, they will become great, let's keep an eye on them because they will amaze us again! Alè Silt.
