Cavea Auditorium Rome
It's 9:10 PM and the Auditorium is not yet completely full... on the stage a quartet of four girls intent on playing electric instruments they've invented themselves... after almost 40 minutes of waiting, something begins to stir, and a series of veils unfurl in front of the stage like a curtain (very much "THE WALL")... finally, the band makes its entrance on stage...
The first piece, which will probably be on the next album, is indeed a nice piece, quite Sigur Ros, but not so exciting... the setlist continues with "Svefn G Englar" played excellently, with such perfection that the difference with the recorded studio album is minimal.
It's the turn of "Ny Batteri" also played to perfection but the expectations start to fade.
Yes, indeed, it's still a Sigur Ros concert, but the desire is to see something different, something that stands apart from the videos available online or the DVDs released about the band.
At the end of "Olsen Olsen" I start to think that the 25 euros could have been saved.
After playing another piece from "Agaetys Byrjun", the four start to deliver their new pieces... the sound has evolved and seems to have matured... these are more or less long suites whose structure is now no longer that of a single central theme stretched to exhaustion ("Svefn G Englar"), but something more similar to "Echoes" by Pink Floyd or their own "Vioar vel til loftarasa"... sudden changes of rhythms and themes apparently unrelated to each other but still capable of creating something unique.
Fortunately, the concert begins to gradually improve before reaching brilliance with the performance of "Vioar vel til loftarasa"... the piece is performed masterfully with such emotional involvement by the band that at the end of the execution, a thunderous applause erupts, the first real applause of the evening.
From now on, the concert settles on a more than good level and becomes a succession of emotions, goosebumps, and satisfaction.
In the finale, something overwhelming occurs... the execution of "Track 8" from ( )... after a calm beginning, the stage transforms into an explosion of distorted images, reverberations, beams of light... pure energy... the piece reaches an unimaginable strength and power... Jonsi's voice rises from the deafening rhythm of the drums and bass in an almost heroic manner. A great exhilarating finale after which a cigarette becomes mandatory!
At ten past midnight, the evening comes to an end... the Auditorium empties... summing up, the impression is that the expectations were more than confirmed and the final feeling is that of having witnessed something unique.
