A young man suffers an accident with consequent memory loss. After he is brought home, the discovery of a medical book makes him recall the love story with a fellow student (who, to get good grades, slept with the teacher), having a terror of autopsies. However, the girl is very jealous, and the story will take crazy turns, up to the moment of the accident and the causes that made it happen.
A surprising Japanese film (Tsukamoto's best after "Snake of June"), truly touching and incisive. Dark feelings and passionate love merge in a work that gives up the director's usual black and white to show us a piece teetering between optimism and madness. Splendid, without much blood or violence... as in "Snake Of June", metaphors regarding disease pervade here too, as a state of physical dissatisfaction or discomfort of the soul.
A must-see!
