The Profile

Shining is a Norwegian band formed in 1999 in Oslo by multi‑instrumentalist Jørgen Munkeby. Evolving from acoustic jazz to an extreme hybrid they dubbed “Blackjazz,” they fuse jazz, prog, industrial textures and metal aggression. Their 2010 album Blackjazz features high‑end production (with Sean Beavan) and a blistering cover of King Crimson’s 21st Century Schizoid Man.

Not to be confused with the Swedish black‑metal band of the same name. Shining (Norway) coined the term “Blackjazz” and is led by Jørgen Munkeby (saxophone, guitar, vocals).

Three DeBaser reviews hail the Norwegian Shining’s Blackjazz era as a wild collision of jazz, prog, and extreme metal. The band’s technical rigor and high-end production (Sean Beavan) fuel an intentionally over-the-top, cyberpunk-tinged onslaught. A ferocious cover of 21st Century Schizoid Man seals their Crimson allegiance. Expect sax, screams, and gleeful chaos.
