The Profile

Shearwater is an American indie rock band formed in 1999 in Austin, Texas, by Jonathan Meiburg and Will Sheff (Okkervil River). Led by Meiburg, the group is known for nature-focused lyrics, expansive arrangements, and albums such as Palo Santo, Rook, The Golden Archipelago, Animal Joy, Jet Plane and Oxbow, and The Great Awakening.

Founded in Austin, Texas (1999) by Jonathan Meiburg and Will Sheff as an offshoot of Okkervil River. Named after a seabird; Meiburg is an ornithologist. The band’s work often centers on environmental and natural-world themes. Notable albums include Palo Santo (2006/2007), Rook (2008), The Golden Archipelago (2010), Animal Joy (2012), Fellow Travelers (2013), Jet Plane and Oxbow (2016), and The Great Awakening (2022).

The reviews frame Shearwater as an Okkervil River offshoot that found its own voice under Jonathan Meiburg. Rook is hailed as near-perfect and emotionally immersive. Winged Life is praised for its dual Sheff/Meiburg character and warm autumnal indie folk. The Golden Archipelago’s themes impress, but production bloat and uneven pacing draw criticism.
