Since the release of an excellent product in its downright easy listening and mainstream outlook like "Lipservice" by Gotthard, many believe that Switzerland dedicated to hard rock is represented solely and exclusively by the group led by Steve Lee and Leo Leoni. Probably many also ignore the fact that the true Gotthard are those from the times of "Dial Hard," but let's move on. In these few lines, I want to review a random album by another talented Swiss band that few people here in Italy may know.
Shakra - "Fall" (2005).
Fifth album for the Swiss from Bern, Shakra, who started their adventure in 1998. "Fall" is a concentrated mix of classic metal - robust and straightforward hard rock with direct songs that seldom exceed 4 minutes. Technically proficient, they do not seek sugary melodies at all costs, and thanks to the passionate, rough, and gritty voice of Mark Fox, they hit the mark with tracks that are decidedly engaging, yet simple. Among the best tracks on the CD, I mention the driving Out Of Control, the mid-tempo Chains Of Temptation, which I've just learned from the source wikipedia.it was famous for its shocking video in which the vocalist injected a dose of heroin. Another essential track in the playlist, particularly for its ability to break the balance, is the pleasing buildup in All Or Nothing, introduced by a nice guitar riff that comes and goes, alternating with a standard but winning riff. The sad How It Feels, enhanced by the almost moving vocal interpretation, is the typical charming slow song to listen to in sweet company. Metallic fierceness in Walk On Water and hypnotic rock in She's My Ecstasy... In short, these Shakra know what they're doing in their genre, and the 50 minutes of "Fall" smoothly glide by, and it would be a shame not to give it even a distracted listen.
Nothing sensational, but a great hard rock album played as it should be by a band that is also extremely competent live. So, guys: rockin' Switzerland claims its space after the Gotthard cyclone, and there are bands that deserve more space!
