THE REVIEW

There was a time when Germany produced a truly original, powerful, creative, crazy, experimental, and psychedelic music: it was the mythical and legendary Krautrock scene. Bands like Amon Duul II, Can, Faust, Popol Vuh, Tangerine Dream, just to name a few important ones, truly changed the history of music. Perhaps not technically excellent like the contemporary English bands, nonetheless bands like Can and Amon Duul were able to unleash devastating and decidedly Teutonic energy. What is left of all this today? Actually, the influence of Krautrock has been significant, especially in industrial and dark-ambient music, thanks to the so-called Cosmic Couriers. But how can we forget the importance of Neu! or Can for so many new wave bands? Or the recent conversion of Der Blutharsch by Albin Julius towards Kraut-influenced sounds? Now I would like to point out an interesting Croatian band, Seven That Spells, which has recently completed a trilogy titled “The Death And Resurrection Of Krautrock: Omega”. I admit I don’t know much about this group but, as soon as I saw such an obvious reference to Krautrock, I decided I absolutely had to listen to them! And I must say I was not disappointed: we are facing a kind of psychedelic rock with strong hard-rock and hallucinogenic hues, all played with the classic motorik sound of Neu! and with the typical power of Amon Duul II! Listen to the long suite “Omega” and you will have an idea of what these Croatians are capable of. There are also echoes of Balkan music that make the music of Seven That Spells particularly rich in nuances and original. Something is coming back to life in the Black Forest!
