THE REVIEW

This historical-contemporary novel tells the story of Ali Agca, the attacker of Pope Wojtyla, whom the author imagines to be even the reincarnation of the evangelical Judas...

It is a subtle critique of the Catholic hierarchical system, following the much more famous analysis of Dostoevsky's "Grand Inquisitor."

The story of the reincarnation is somewhat underdeveloped by the author, but the rewriting of the evangelical stories, combined with the brilliant intuition to draw a parallel with the attack on the Pope, makes the book more than enjoyable (as are all of Vassalli's works, after all...)
