THE REVIEW

If on one hand punk 77 paved the way for the American hardcore of the early 80s, on the other, it forged, thanks to groups much more carefree and irreverent than the others, pop punk. A genre often identified as typical of the 2000s. Wrong. Perhaps it was more or less forgotten in the first half of the 80s but had a powerful comeback in the underground at the end of the decade and the beginning of the next, led by one of the most influential punk bands ever, Screeching Weasel. Just to give an example, if Screeching Weasel hadn't existed, Green Day would never have existed (of course, we’re talking about the early Green Day albums) and perhaps they wouldn't have made the missteps of the last decade and perhaps there wouldn't be the contrast between old fans who grew up with them during the 90s and new 13-year-old fans who only know the singles from the last 2 albums... but let's let them fight freely. What matters is that thankfully Screeching Weasel existed.

If in the genesis of the so-called punk revival on one side we have Bad Religion, on the other we have Screeching Weasel.

"Boogadaboogadaboogada!" the second album by the Chicago band, released in 1988 synthesizes all the characteristics of pop punk: fun, irreverence, madness, and a great vibe. Out of 26 songs, only 5 exceed 2 minutes in length. The backbone is the playful and irresistibly irreverent tones with which topics sometimes serious or semi-serious and often mad, adolescent, or even improbable (Girls and mental health are two very popular topics) are portrayed, tones typical of pieces like "Stupid Over You", "Sunshine", "Dingbat", "I Wanna Be Naked" or "I Hate Led Zeppelin". However, there are also more serious and harsh pieces, tending more towards Hardcore punk and songs more akin to the Descendents (with whom there are many similarities, which is definitely positive).

In short, this is an injection of pure pop punk, irreverent and insanely fun, the best.

Boogaboogadaboogada! to everyone!
