"How much wood would a woodchuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood? If would chuck as much wood as a woodchuck could, if a woodchuck could chuck wood."
This tongue-twister alone would suffice to frame these SCATTERBRAIN, among the exponents of that FUNK-METAL crossover of the late '80s and early '90s, which shook the States with the proliferation of bands dedicated to this new way of making music.
It was the era of FAITH NO MORE, FISHBONE, JANE'S ADDICTION, LIVING COLOUR, PRIMUS, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, WHITE TRASH, PSYCHEFUNKAPUS (does anyone remember them?), 24-7 SPYZ, etc. Among them, SCATTERBRAIN were perhaps the least serious in terms of lyrics, thanks to a mix of nonsense and incredible tongue-twisters accompanied by a musical melting pot that ranged from metal to hard rock, funk with brass sections, blues, jazz, hip-hop, and more...
A cauldron held together by the absurd voice of vocalist TOMMY CHRIST and the technical prowess of the remaining members of the group, already active in the '80s under the name LUDICHRIST and authors of a couple of albums related to the most uncompromising punk metal. In 1990, the name changed to SCATTERBRAIN and the sound changed too.
This is the second album with the new moniker after "HERE COMES TROUBLE" (1990). To highlight: all the entertaining ten songs that make up the album, with particular mention for TASTE JUST LIKE CHICKEN, SONATA#11 (RONDO ALLA TURCA) a guitar remake of the famous MOZART sonata, SWISS ARMY GIRL (with its military march), and the finale DOWN THE ROAD (ROCK'N'ROLL AIN'T PRETTY).
An album that, unfortunately, sounds a bit dated today, but which is an excellent testament to the creative vein that was in the air in those years, when in the name of originality, people tried to do everything, unlike the bands of these years that look to the '70s, stealing riffs and looks without a shred of creativity.
